A sea mine linked to Ukraine was discovered in Crete
On the Greek island of Crete, fishermen discovered a sea mine in a rocky coastal area near the municipality of Naples. Following the discovery, the area was cordoned off and security forces arrived at the scene.
This is reported by the Greek media Ekriti and ProtoThema.
According to preliminary information, the dangerous object was found in the St. Anthony area in the north of the island. After being notified of the find, the Coast Guard and other services quickly arrived at the scene.
“Due to the possible presence of explosive materials, security protocols were activated,” local media wrote.
According to media reports, coast guard representatives suggested that the mine may be of Ukrainian origin, but this is still being officially verified.
Greek services are currently investigating whether it is an old munition that washed ashore or a more recent origin related to activity in the Eastern Mediterranean region.
A similar incident, according to journalists, has been recorded before. Last year, a sea mine was found on the coast of the island of Rhodes.
As previously reported, Greece said it expects explanations and an apology from Ukraine over a naval drone found near the island of Lefkada in the Ionian Sea . Athens believes the drone could have posed a danger to civilian vessels.
