The Dominican Republic-flagged merchant vessel PROGRESS IV caught fire in the Black Sea, in Romania’s exclusive economic zone. Romanian President Nicos Dan said the ship was likely hit, but urged not to jump to conclusions.

This is reported by News.ro.

The distress signal was received at around 17:55 on August 27. The vessel was approximately 15 nautical miles from Sfintu Gheorghe. There were 12 crew members on board.

All the sailors were evacuated. One of them was injured. Ten people were taken away by the coast guard, and two more were picked up by a merchant ship passing nearby.

The rescue operation was coordinated by the Maritime Rescue Center of the Romanian Maritime Administration. Coast Guard ships, rescue vessels and a border patrol boat participated in it. Waves about 2.5 meters high made the evacuation difficult, but it was completed by 20:47.

According to Nikushor Dan, the ship was likely hit and could have sunk. At the same time, the president stressed that it is currently unknown who could have hit it and under what circumstances. The exact cause of the fire and the circumstances of the incident will be established during the investigation.

It was previously reported that the Liberian-flagged tanker Gas Lisbon, which was transporting propane to the Ukrainian port of Reni, was damaged off the coast of Romania. After the incident, a fire broke out on the vessel, and the crew was evacuated.
