A signal for Trump: Democrats win local elections in the US

The United States held major local elections on November 4, the first since President Donald Trump began his second term. According to CNN, the Democratic Party won several notable victories in various states.

In Virginia, 46-year-old Democrat Abigail Spanberger is celebrating her victory, receiving more than 53% of the vote. She will become the state’s first female governor. Her party colleague Ghazala Hashmi, the likely lieutenant governor, will become the first Muslim woman elected to such a statewide position.
In New Jersey, 53-year-old Democrat Mickey Sherrill won with 56% of the vote, becoming the state’s first female Democratic governor.
In New York, Democratic Socialist Zoran Mamdani made history by winning 50.4% of the vote to become the city’s first Muslim mayor. He defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who was running as an independent, for a second time in the general election.
According to CNN, the winning campaigns had different agendas, but a common thread was a focus on accessibility issues and criticism of Trump’s policies. The election results demonstrate the dissatisfaction of many Americans with the incumbent president’s performance less than a year after his re-election.
Donald Trump himself has already commented on the defeat: he cited his absence from the ballot and the prolonged government shutdown as reasons. “Trump not being on the ballot and the government shutdown are two reasons why the Republicans lost,” he wrote on Truth Social on November 4.
Previously, Trump actively supported Republican candidates in New Jersey and Virginia, held televised rallies and urged voters to vote for former New York Governor Cuomo, who ultimately lost to Mamdani.
Mamdani’s victory is historic for New York’s Muslim community, which numbers about a million people. Mamdani, 34, was born in Uganda to a family of Indian descent and describes himself as a “democratic socialist.” His campaign platform, in particular, included higher taxes for millionaires.
As a reminder, the presidential election in Ireland was won by left-wing MP Catherine Connolly, who received about 64% of the vote. She is known for her calls for Irish neutrality in Russia’s war against Ukraine and criticism of NATO, while repeatedly expressing support for the Ukrainian people.
As reported, in the early elections to the Dutch parliament in 2025, the centrist party D66 gained a significant advantage, while the far-right forces of Geert Wilders suffered significant losses. Preliminary results, published by the ANP agency after counting 50% of the votes, show: D66 receives 27 seats in the 150-seat parliament, while Wilders’ Freedom Party – 25, losing 12 seats compared to the previous convocation.
