A stunning starburst: how and when to see the June Bootids in Ukraine

Every year in June, Ukrainians can observe one of the brightest meteor showers – the June Bootyds. This meteor shower attracts the attention of both astronomers and those who like to look at the night sky. In 2025, the peak of activity will fall on June 26-27 – that’s when Kyiv residents will have a good opportunity to see this celestial show.
The meteor shower will last from June 22 to July 2, but the best time to watch the meteor shower is on June 26 and 27. The maximum activity is expected around 2:00 PM on June 27, Kyiv time, and the meteors will be clearly visible at night.
In Kyiv, this meteor shower will be visible throughout the night, because the point in the sky from which the meteors “fly” does not go beyond the horizon.
To get the best view of the June Bootids, it’s best to look at the sky after sunset, when the meteors are high above the horizon. At that time, they appear as short, bright bursts. At other times, they fall at an angle and leave long trails.
For greater comfort, observers are advised not to look directly at that point, but slightly to the side – about 30-40 degrees from it. This way you can see more “shooting stars.”
The June Bootids are formed when Earth passes through a cloud of dust and particles from comet 7P/Ponsa–Winnecke. These particles burn up in the upper atmosphere, creating a “shooting star” effect.
This year, the peak falls on a new moon, so moonlight will not interfere with observations.
So, June 26 and 27 are the best time to look up at the sky and enjoy one of the most beautiful natural spectacles of the year.
