“A symbol and promise of reconciliation”: Pope calls on all countries of the world for an Olympic truce

Pope Leo XIV called for a temporary cessation of hostilities in the world on the occasion of the opening of the XXV Olympic Winter Games in Italy. The pontiff emphasized the significance of the Olympic Truce as a symbol of reconciliation and hope.

In his letter, the pontiff noted that the truce initiative had already been proposed by the International Olympic Committee and the United Nations General Assembly. He stressed the need to use this mechanism as a tool to reduce tensions in the world.

“The International Olympic Committee and the United Nations General Assembly recently proposed again the Olympic Truce. In a world that yearns for peace, we need instruments that can put an end to “abuses of power, displays of force and indifference to the rule of law”. On the occasion of the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, I sincerely invite all nations to rediscover and respect this instrument of hope that is the Olympic Truce, a symbol and promise of reconciliation in the world,” said Pope Leo XIV.

The Pope also emphasized that war and violence cannot be a way to resolve conflicts and are a defeat for humanity.

“May your meetings during the Olympic Games become a symbolic sign for all of society and a prelude to a new era in which nations will no longer raise swords against one another,” the Pope said.

The XXV Olympic Winter Games begin on February 6 in Italy. The opening ceremony will be held at the San Siro stadium in Milan. By February 22, more than 4,000 athletes from 96 countries will compete in 16 sports and compete for 116 medal events. The Paralympic Games will run from March 6 to 15.
