“A terrible act of terror”: European allies respond to massive nighttime shelling of Ukraine
European leaders and diplomats have reacted to Russia’s massive attack on Ukraine and the use of the Oreshnik missile. Representatives of European countries have called for increased support for Ukraine and pressure on Russia.

French President Emmanuel Macron said that the Russian attack and the use of the Oreshnik ballistic missile indicate a further escalation of the war by Russia.
“The Russian attack and the use of the Oreshnik ballistic missile demonstrate the further escalation and impasse of Russia’s aggressive war,” Macron said.
According to him, these actions only strengthen the determination to support Ukraine, work towards a just and lasting peace, and strengthen the security of Europe.
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaia Kallas stated that Russia is terrorizing Ukraine with strikes on city centers due to the situation on the battlefield.
“This is a horrific act of terror aimed at destroying as many civilians as possible,” Callas said.
She also commented on the use of the Oreshnik missile.
“Moscow’s use of Oreshnik intermediate-range ballistic missiles – systems designed to carry nuclear warheads – is a political tactic of intimidation and a reckless maneuver on the verge of using nuclear weapons,” she stressed.
Kallas added that next week, EU foreign ministers will discuss increasing international pressure on Russia.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orban called the Russian attack unacceptable.
“Russia’s brutal nighttime attack on Kyiv is another horrific reminder of the human cost of this war. Civilians should never wake up to missiles, drones, explosions and fear for their lives,” Orban said.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said that Russia continues to strike at Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure and is increasing the intensity of its use of weapons.
“We stand in solidarity with the Ukrainian people, who have been suffering from the consequences of this aggressive war for over 4 years. Italy will continue to work together with European and international partners to achieve a just and lasting peace,” the statement said.
Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Coi said Russia used “imprecise” missiles during the attack on residential areas.
“This is state terrorism and it should be assessed accordingly,” she wrote.
Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger said that Austria is outraged by Russia’s large-scale attack on Kyiv.
“These strikes only serve as a reminder that what is at stake is Ukraine’s freedom, Europe’s security, and our shared values. Russia will not succeed in breaking the Ukrainian people. Our support remains unwavering,” she stressed.
Finnish President Alexander Stubb said that residential areas and civilian infrastructure have once again become Russia’s targets.
“This senseless war of aggression must be stopped. We must continue to increase pressure on the Russian war machine and support Ukraine,” Stubb said.
Moldovan President Maia Sandu called Russia’s massive strike on Kyiv a war crime.
“The killing of civilians is a war crime. The free world must respond by increasing support for Ukraine and pressure on Russia. Moldova stands in solidarity with Ukraine and its courageous people,” Sandu wrote.
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda said that a new large-scale attack on Kyiv once again proves that terror against the civilian population remains the Kremlin’s main tool in the war against Ukraine.
On the eve, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen condemned the massive Russian attack on Ukraine and announced new assistance to strengthen Ukrainian air defenses . She stressed that the European Union’s support for Ukraine continues.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported on the consequences of Russia’s massive nighttime attack on Kyiv and other cities in Ukraine . The strikes killed 4 people and injured about 100.
As is known, on the night of May 24, Russian troops carried out a large-scale combined attack on Ukraine , using missiles and kamikaze drones. Kyiv suffered the greatest destruction – damage and fires were recorded in all districts of the capital.
By the way, three garages were damaged as a result of the Russian strike with an Oreshnik missile on Bila Tserkva in the Kyiv region.
