A Ukrainian choir sang “Shchedryk” in King Charles III’s Christmas address.
The Ukrainian choir “Songs for Ukraine” took part in the annual Christmas address of King Charles III of Great Britain.
The video message was published on the royal family’s official YouTube channel.
At Westminster Abbey, the choir performed a new arrangement of Carol of the Bells, based on Shchedryk by the Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych.
The choir’s musical director and principal conductor, Bohdan Parashchak, noted that it was a great honor for the choir to participate in the monarch’s Christmas broadcast. He added that “Songs for Ukraine” remains an important voice for the Ukrainian community in the UK, a significant portion of which was forced to flee their homes due to the war.
The “Songs for Ukraine” choir was founded in the spring of 2023 at the initiative of the Royal Opera House in response to Russia’s full-scale invasion. The choir comprises approximately 130 Ukrainians, most of whom are internally displaced persons.
