A Ukrzaliznytsia official was arrested for accepting a $100,000 bribe to dismantle a railway track.
Law enforcement officers exposed the deputy director of the environmental safety department of Ukrzaliznytsia for accepting a bribe.
The National Police , the State Bureau of Investigation and the Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko reported this.
According to the investigation, a representative of a granite manufacturing plant in the Khmelnytskyi region approached the official about dismantling or relocating a backup bypass track, which was owned by Ukrzaliznytsia and was interfering with the quarry’s expansion.
According to investigators, the scheme involved several stages: first, initiating a “seasonal detour” to declare the track unprofitable, then dismantling it, decommissioning it, and removing it from the register. There were also plans to transfer the land under the track to the community for the needs of the enterprise.
The official assured that he could organize all the necessary approvals with the management of Ukrzaliznytsia, relevant departments, and the Ministry of Infrastructure, and promised to resolve the issue “turnkey” within 3-6 months.
For this he demanded 100 thousand dollars in cash and even promised to provide a receipt as proof of obligations.
The official was detained on April 8 while receiving the entire amount—approximately 4.4 million hryvnias in hryvnia equivalent.
He was charged under Part 4 of Article 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine—obtaining illegal benefits on an especially large scale. The penalty under this article carries a sentence of up to 12 years’ imprisonment with confiscation of property. A petition has now been filed with the court seeking pretrial detention.
