A WWII warship has surfaced on the Danube in Serbia due to a drought

A sunken German warship from World War II has resurfaced in Serbia due to a critical drop in water levels on the Danube. The ship was discovered near the town of Prahovo, and the wreckage of the sunken ships continues to complicate navigation on the river.

According to the publication, the ship was probably sunk by German troops during the retreat from the Red Army offensive at the end of World War II.

The European Investment Bank estimates that about 200 sunken ships remain at the bottom of the Danube, including Kriegsmarine warships, cargo ships, tugboats and barges. Some still have turrets, bridge decks, masts and damaged hulls, while others are almost completely covered in sand.

The newspaper notes that shipwrecks create serious obstacles to navigation. According to Serbian estimates, the country loses about 5 million euros each year due to delays in commercial shipping.

The European Investment Bank has allocated 16 million euros to clean up the Danube riverbed as part of the investment program for the Western Balkans.

Meanwhile, in the Bulgarian part of the Danube near the city of Ruse, archaeologists discovered the remains of a woolly mammoth through a shallowing of the river. Among the finds are a jawbone, tusks, a shoulder blade and a femur. Researchers suggest that the animal was young, and the dark color of the bones may indicate a long stay in a swampy environment.
