About 1,600 ships remain blocked near the Strait of Hormuz as shipping companies refuse to navigate the dangerous route due to safety risks and possible financial losses.

CNN writes about this.

According to the publication, US President Donald Trump’s operation to “escort” ships through the strait lasted only 48 hours. During that time, only two ships were able to pass through.

After that, the mission effectively stopped, and companies were faced with a choice: wait for the situation to improve or try to pass through the danger zone in the short “windows of opportunity” that may appear over the next two months.

Experts emphasize that damage to ships can lead to millions in losses and disruption of logistics chains. An additional risk is created by insurance restrictions: most contracts contain “war clauses” that allow insurers not to cover losses in a war zone.

Port of Los Angeles CEO Gene Seroka said that even with U.S. military escort, navigating the strait requires extremely precise risk assessments. He said shipping companies lack confidence in the safety of the route.

Earlier, Iran said that safe passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz is possible only under “new procedures” after the suspension of the US military operation in this waterway.

Recall that the US and Iran may soon agree on a basic agreement that should stop tensions in the region and open the way to full-fledged negotiations on the nuclear program.
