Ukraine and Russia exchanged prisoners of war according to the formula 270 for 270. According to this formula, each side was to hand over 270 people to the other, for a total of 540 prisoners of war.

This was reported by the head of the Center for the Study of Occupation, Petro Andryuschenko.

“The exchange has begun. We are waiting,” the message said.

The day before, Russian media also reported on the preparation of the exchange, which was supposed to take place on October 23.

Information about the exchange and the number of released Ukrainian soldiers is currently awaited from official representatives of Ukraine.

Subsequently, President Volodymyr Zelensky officially announced the return of 270 Ukrainians from Russian captivity. Among those released were servicemen from various units of the Defense Forces and 9 civilians, most of whom had been in captivity since 2022.

According to Zelensky, most of the released servicemen defended Mariupol. Defenders who fought in the Donetsk, Luhansk, Kharkiv, Zaporizhia, Kherson, Kyiv, Mykolaiv, and Chernihiv directions are also returning home.

Among those released are National Guard members, including Azov servicemen, border guards, territorial defense fighters, servicemen of the Navy, Land Forces, Airborne Assault Forces, and the State Special Transport Service.

According to the president, many Ukrainians were illegally convicted in Russia. Among those returning home are 5 people who were presumed dead in the Russian terrorist attack in Olenivka in July 2022.

Zelensky stressed that Ukraine continues to search for all of its citizens who remain in captivity, and thanked everyone working to organize the exchanges.

The day before, the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Dmytro Lubinets, reported that Ukraine had returned 7 civilians to the territory under its control within the framework of agreements on the mutual return of people with Russia.

According to the Ombudsman, the agreements were reached thanks to the humanitarian channel of communication with the Russian Commissioner for Human Rights, Yana Lantratova. As part of this work, 7 Ukrainians returned to the territory controlled by Ukraine, and another 7 people left for Russia to reunite with their families with the support of the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Given the health condition of a 90-year-old woman with limited mobility and a 50-year-old Ukrainian woman who suffered a myocardial infarction and stroke and has other diseases, the necessary transportation conditions were provided when organizing their return.

A young woman and her child were also returned. At the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the woman was temporarily in Mariupol, but due to the fighting and subsequent occupation of the city, she was unable to return to her family.

The obstacle to returning to the territory controlled by Ukraine was the processing of the child’s documents. Currently, the mother and child are already at home and need psychological support.

“We will continue this humanitarian work so that there are more such returns,” said Dmytro Lubinets.

Earlier, as part of repatriation measures , the bodies of 252 dead were returned to Ukraine , which, according to the Russian side, belong to Ukrainian servicemen.
