Russian forces have deliberately targeted the power line linking the occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant to Ukraine’s national grid, once again putting the facility at risk and prompting accusations of nuclear blackmail.

This was announced by the Minister of Energy Herman Galushchenko.

He explained that the affected power line is critical for maintaining the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant’s basic functions and ensuring radiation safety.

According to the minister, the Russian strike caused a complete blackout at the facility.

Galushchenko also noted that since the start of the full-scale invasion, the Zaporizhzhia NPP has already experienced a total loss of power eight times and has repeatedly been on the brink of disconnection.

“This is yet another act of nuclear terror by the Russians,” the minister emphasized.

As a reminder, in May, due to enemy shelling, the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant lost one of its two external power supply lines and was at risk of a total blackout.

Ukraine has called on the IAEA leadership to take a clear stance on the Russian occupation of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant and to avoid actions that could legitimize Moscow’s control over the facility.

Notably, the United States has reportedly offered to assume oversight of Ukraine’s nuclear power plants if such a move would help bring an end to the Russian-Ukrainian war.
