For the second day in a row, Russian airline Aeroflot is canceling dozens of flights due to a powerful hacker attack that disabled the company’s IT systems. The incident affected more than 20,000 passengers, and the total financial losses could reach tens of millions of dollars. The full restoration of the digital infrastructure could take up to a year.
This is reported by Russian media.
On Tuesday, July 29, Aeroflot canceled another 53 flights — 22 from Moscow’s Sheremetyevo and 31 in the opposite direction. This is the second day of a large-scale disruption of air transportation: the day before, the company canceled 108 of 260 scheduled flights, including routes to Yerevan, Almaty, Minsk, Irkutsk, Novosibirsk, Chelyabinsk and other cities.
Systems failures at several regional airports have left passengers stranded, with many still unable to board flights, particularly in Kemerovo, Krasnoyarsk, Novokuznetsk, Omsk and Novosibirsk. In total, at least 20,000 people have been affected, according to Russian sources.
According to preliminary estimates, Aeroflot’s total losses range from $10 million to $50 million. This includes financial losses from delays, logistics disruptions, technical failures, and reputational risks. Journalists’ sources also report already confirmed losses of more than 250 million rubles (over $2.7 million).
Although the airline claims to be operating 93% of its scheduled flights, experts warn that some of its IT systems have been completely destroyed, including critical components and databases. Experts estimate that partial recovery will take at least two months, while full recovery could take up to a year.
It was previously reported that as a result of a large-scale cyberattack by two hacker groups — Silent Crow and the Belarusian “Cyberpartisans” — the IT infrastructure of the Russian airline Aeroflot was destroyed, dozens of flights were canceled, and 20 TB of data was stolen, including personal information of passengers . The hackers said that they had been monitoring the company’s critical systems for a year, and are now preparing to publish the stolen information. In response, the Russian authorities are silent.
