After a month in darkness: Zaporizhzhia NPP receives electricity from Ukraine again

External power supply was restored at the temporarily occupied Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant, which allowed the facility to be brought out of the complete power outage mode, in which it had been for almost a month.
This was reported by the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine.
As the IAEA clarified, the power supply to the ZNPP was restored after the completion of repairs to the 750 kV high-voltage line “Dniprovska”. Thus, the plant is reconnected to the Ukrainian power system.
“Restoring external power is an extremely important step in ensuring nuclear safety. The IAEA continues to cooperate with both parties to complete the repair of the 330 kV Ferosplavna line,” the agency said in a statement.
Ukrainian Energy Minister Svitlana Grinchuk emphasized that the reason for the prolonged blackout was regular shelling and damage to power lines carried out by Russian occupation forces.
“A complete power outage at a nuclear power plant for a month is unprecedented in world practice,” she emphasized.
According to Grinchuk, the current incident is the tenth blackout at the ZNPP since the beginning of the Russian occupation. At the same time, Ukrainian energy workers have restored the power supply lines that ensure the operation of the plant 42 times since the start of the full-scale war.
Let us recall that the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant was in reserve power supply mode for a whole month and operated exclusively on fuel generators. This posed a serious risk of a large-scale nuclear disaster , which could have affected not only Ukraine, but also all of Europe.
The situation changed for the better when, after lengthy negotiations between representatives of Ukraine and Russia , the process of restoring the connection of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant to the Ukrainian power grid was initiated .
