After the election failure, Merz was supported by the faction: what the CDU/CSU said

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has secured the support of the CDU/CSU faction after his party suffered a defeat in the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania state election. The MPs have denied the possibility of an internal party revolt and called for unity.

At a meeting of the CDU/CSU parliamentary faction on September 22, MPs publicly opposed any attempts to weaken Merz’s position. The faction’s deputy chairman, Matthias Middelberg, urged his colleagues to prevent a split.

“If we somehow allow ourselves to be separated now, not only will this government fail, but ultimately this country will fail as well,” he said.

Middelberg stressed that the government and the parliamentary majority should use the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to act together.

According to the meeting participants, Merz, for his part, confirmed his intention to continue the reforms planned by the government. In particular, these include changes in the field of pension provision and care for the elderly.

At the same time, some of the reforms remain the subject of disputes with the CDU/CSU’s coalition partner, the Social Democratic Party of Germany.

As a reminder, according to preliminary official results, the Christian Democratic Union of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is gaining only 4.9% in the elections to the state parliament of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The party does not overcome the required five percent barrier and will not be represented in the state parliament for the first time.
