After the Senate’s decision: the bill on sanctions against Russia was submitted to the House of Representatives

A bipartisan group of US congressmen has introduced a bill to the House of Representatives to strengthen sanctions against Russia and Iran. The document was previously supported by the US Senate.

This was announced by Republican House of Representatives member Michael McCaul.

According to him, he introduced the bill together with Democrat Steny Goyer and 16 other congressmen.

According to The Hill, the text of the document is completely consistent with the version that passed the Senate earlier this month. Then, the bill was voted 86 in favor, 11 against.

The House of Representatives could vote in the fall. Congressmen are currently on vacation, so consideration of the document will not begin until September.

The bill would maintain sanctions against Russian leaders, big businessmen, and state-owned enterprises. Restrictions would also apply to foreign companies that aid the Russian military-industrial complex.

Separately, the document allows the US to impose tariffs of up to 100% on goods from the five largest countries that import Russian oil and gas, including China and India.

The specific amount of duties will be determined by US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.

During the consideration of the document, the Senate also voted for an amendment that would have removed the possibility of imposing such duties against buyers of Russian energy resources. However, the senators did not support it.

At the same time, the bill may face a more difficult review in the House of Representatives. Some Democrats fear that the document will not only increase pressure on Russia, but also give the White House an additional tool to impose high tariffs against other countries.

Due to disagreements, congressmen may propose a number of amendments, which will delay consideration of the document. At present, there is no certainty that Congress will ultimately pass the bill in its current form.

It was previously reported that Canada has imposed sanctions against the defense company Streit Group, whose armored vehicles are used by the Russian Guard in the war against Ukraine.
