Alcohol poisoning: 19-year-old suspected of killing soldier on behalf of Russia

A 19-year-old resident of Poltava region is suspected of being involved in a special operation by Russian intelligence services to kill a Ukrainian soldier through poisoned alcohol sent by mail as a “gift.”

This was reported by the Zhytomyr Regional Prosecutor’s Office.

According to the investigation, the man may have been recruited via Telegram, promising a monetary reward. He was allegedly given the task of organizing the poisoning of a 23-year-old serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

“He was promised 5,000 hryvnias for completing the task,” the prosecutor’s office noted.

According to law enforcement officials, the scheme continued to develop through fake social media accounts. They allegedly contacted the soldier under the guise of a girl through social media, established trusting communication, and agreed to send him a package with a “gift.”

After that, the suspect, following the curator’s instructions, purchased a bottle of alcohol and, according to the investigation, added a toxic substance to it using a syringe without damaging the packaging.

“He acted according to clear instructions and did not violate the external integrity of the packaging,” the prosecutor’s office reported.

The package was sent to a soldier, who later consumed the contents and died in hospital a few days later without regaining consciousness.

The suspect was detained at his place of residence. He has now been notified of the suspicion and the issue of a preventive measure in the form of detention is being resolved.

The investigation is ongoing, and law enforcement officers are identifying other possible participants in the scheme.
