Russia has again begun using the experimental 9M729 cruise missile against Ukraine, which is part of the modernized 9K722 Iskander-M1 missile system with a range of up to 1,500 kilometers.

This is evidenced by data from the military-analytical channel “eRadar”.

The first cases of the use of this missile on the territory of Ukraine were recorded back in 2022. However, after a series of unsuccessful launches that led to damage to several launchers, the project was temporarily suspended and sent for further development.

Unlike the standard Iskander tactical complex, the experimental version of the Iskander-M1 is equipped with four launch containers on one self-propelled installation. The main difference of the complex is the 9M729 missile with a significantly increased flight range – up to 1,500 km.

According to available information, 24 self-propelled launchers of this type are currently deployed around Ukraine. Their total potential salvo could be up to 96 9M729 cruise missiles.

In the event of massive use of these missiles, the threat zone would cover the entire territory of Ukraine, including the western regions. For example, the distance from Kursk to Lviv in a straight line is about 870 kilometers, which is significantly less than the maximum flight range of the missile.

Recall that during the night shelling of Ukraine on January 20, Russia probably used RM-48U training missiles for the first time, which were originally created as decoys for training air defense systems.
