Almost completely de-energized: Russia shelled the Zaporizhzhia and Dnipropetrovsk regions

Russia has shelled the Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhia regions with drones. The prolonged and massive attack, which began mid-day on January 7, has resulted in power outages.

Power outages are reported in Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih, Kamianske, and Zaporizhzhia. According to the Ministry of Energy, the Zaporizhzhia and Dnipropetrovsk regions are almost completely without power. Critical infrastructure is running on generators.

The situation is most dire in Dnipro. Videos show explosions that shut down local thermal power plants.

The regional capital is without electricity, water, heating, internet, and mobile phone service. The subway has stopped operating. Central power is also out at medical facilities, which are currently operating on generators. Restoration times are unknown. The moment of the power outage in Dnipro was captured on video.

Local authorities are recommending residents stock up on water. Despite the late hour, people rushed to stock up on water at Dnipro supermarkets.

The disruptions even affected DTEK’s website, which promises power restoration in Dnipro… in June 2027. Of course, repairs will begin as soon as the air threat passes, but the attack on the region was still ongoing at the time of publication. Kryvyi Rih and Dnipro were under attack.

In Zaporizhzhia, authorities are asking residents to limit their mobile phone use. 120 Invincibility Points have been activated in the city. Among other things, a shopping center in Zaporizhzhia was damaged.

Power outages in both cities are so severe that even air raid sirens are not being activated correctly. In Zaporizhzhia, police will assume the warning function. The situation is further complicated by the approaching cold snap , which is expected to hit Ukraine around the weekend.
