Almost three hours of intense confrontation: Svitolina won the WTA 1000 tennis tournament in Rome

Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina (WTA 10) won the WTA 1000 tournament in Rome, where she defeated the world’s fourth-ranked Coco Gauff from the United States in the final. The match ended with the Ukrainian’s victory in three sets, which brought her the title of the prestigious clay-court tournament.

In the final match, Elina Svitolina defeated Coco Hoffe 6:4, 6:7 (3:7), 6:2 and won her second title of the 2026 season.
Svitolina played a tense final against Coco Gauff, who gained a high tempo from the first games . The American tennis player entered the game better and quickly led 2:0, but the Ukrainian gradually seized the initiative and leveled the situation on the court. The key moment of the opening set was a double fault by Gauff on her own serve, after which Svitolina brought the game to a 6:4 victory.
In the second set, the fight became even more intense, and the rallies became longer and more exhausting. Both tennis players consistently responded to each other’s won games, not allowing their opponent to create a comfortable lead. The fate of the match was decided in a tie-break, where Coco Gauff turned out to be more collected, winning it 7:3.
The match came to a close in the third set , which was fast-paced and featured a lot of aggressive attacks. Svitolina added precision and variety, forcing her opponent to constantly play under pressure and move around the court. The Ukrainian tennis player confidently brought the game to a close with a score of 6:2, securing victory in the WTA 1000 tournament in Rome. The game lasted 2 hours and 52 minutes.
“Svitolina played her sixth head-to-head match against Gauff and won her fourth,” the tournament organizers reported.
The Ukrainian tennis player also confirmed her stable advantage in head-to-head matches against the American, winning her third match of the 2026 season.
On her way to the final, Svitolina defeated a series of opponents, including Noemi Basiletti, Haley Baptiste, Nikola Bartunkova, Elena Rybakina, and Iga Świątek.
“This season, Elina defeated Coco in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open and the semifinals of the WTA 1000 in Dubai,” the tournament material states.
This title was the Ukrainian’s 20th in her career and fifth in the WTA 1000 series.
Svitolina has already won the tournament in Rome three times – in 2017, 2018 and 2026, and also has victories in Dubai and Toronto.
The final in Rome became part of the WTA clay season, where the Ukrainian continues to fight for high positions in the world rankings.
