In Poland, amid Russian attacks on Ukraine and airspace violations, the restoration of Cold War-era shelters has begun. In Lublin, the modernization of a bomb shelter under the building of the municipal transport company MPK has been completed.
This is reported by Reuters .
The bomb shelter in Lublin was built in the mid-1980s. At that time, Poland was part of the Warsaw Pact, and military facilities were built with a possible attack from NATO in mind.
During the reconstruction, the direction of the emergency exit was changed: if previously it was directed east, now it has been turned west.
According to the government, there are about 2,000 specialized shelters in Poland, which can accommodate about 300,000 people. Up to 23 million more citizens can use 86,000 “basic protection” places – basements, underground parking lots and metro stations.
The updated shelter of MPK Lublin can operate autonomously for 3 days and accommodates up to 200 people. According to Kamil Zhond, civil protection inspector of MPK Lublin, it should provide people with air, water and electricity even in the event of a complete shutdown of external networks.
At the same time, there remains a problem in Poland with the public’s awareness of the location of shelters. Local resident Elżbieta Woznica said she does not know if there is a suitable shelter near her house.
Polish officials are also drafting a new pre-war law that takes into account Ukraine’s experience. The document is intended to accelerate the transition of the state civil defense system from peacetime to wartime.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that Russian strikes were approaching Polish borders and called for preparation for difficult times.
By the way, Poland introduced new air defense procedures on October 1, amid Russian missile and drone attacks on Ukraine. The new rules simplify the identification of foreign aerial objects and allow for faster decisions to shoot them down.
