Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European allies plan to persuade U.S. President Donald Trump to do more to support Ukraine at the G7 summit in France, focusing on increased military aid, peace talks and joint defense projects.
This is reported by Politico .
According to the publication, for the first time in a long time, Ukraine has received additional opportunities for diplomatic work due to the improvement of the situation on the front . It is noted that Ukrainian drones are striking Russian logistical routes, and the front line has largely stabilized.
Journalists note that for the first time since 2023, Kyiv has returned more territories than it lost . This, according to the publication’s interlocutors, creates favorable conditions for intensifying diplomatic efforts by Ukraine and its partners.
One of the key issues at the summit will be further military support for Ukraine. In particular, Kyiv needs additional air defense systems and missiles for them. Ukraine is also seeking permission to produce Patriot interceptor missiles on its own territory and is in talks with Germany about transferring additional missiles from German stocks.
Separately, the allies plan to discuss the future format of peace talks . According to the publication, Ukraine insists on the participation of not only the United States, but also European states in a possible negotiation process with Russia.
Politico’s interlocutors note that Kyiv and its European partners oppose Russia’s territorial concessions without legal recognition of such changes.
Another topic of negotiations may be cooperation in the field of drone production . The publication writes that Ukraine has already concluded a number of industrial cooperation agreements with Great Britain, Germany and Canada to scale up drone production.
In particular, British companies are to supply Ukraine with 120,000 drones by 2026 under previously signed agreements. Ukraine has concluded a similar agreement with Canada on the production and supply of drones.
Ukraine also continues to call on partners to increase economic pressure on Russia. According to the publication, the European Union expects to enlist the support of the United States for further sanctions steps during the G7 summit.
The G7 summit will take place in Evian, where world leaders will hold a separate meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. However, there is currently no information about a planned bilateral meeting between Zelensky and Trump.
By the way, European leaders plan to discuss with US President Donald Trump possible ways to diplomatically resolve Russia’s war against Ukraine during the G7 summit in France. One of the key topics will be the potential format of future peace talks.
It was previously reported that US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will meet in France on June 16 as part of the G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains . The leaders are expected to meet during working sessions, although separate bilateral talks are not planned.
