An attempt on a Russian opposition figure who fought for Ukraine was foiled in Kyiv

The Security Service of Ukraine has detained an FSB agent in Kyiv who, according to investigators, was preparing to assassinate a Russian opposition figure. The woman was supposed to shoot the activist near one of the capital’s gyms.

This was reported by the Security Service of Ukraine.

According to the SBU, Russian special services planned the assassination of an opposition figure who heads an all-Ukrainian public organization and works as a kickboxing coach. Since 2022, the man has been fighting on the side of Ukraine – first in the Kyiv region, and later in the eastern direction.

The investigation established that the agent was supposed to set up an ambush near the gym and shoot the man with a combat pistol.

SBU officers detained a woman near a sports complex while she was surveying the area and looking for a position for a future attack.

According to the investigation, the FSB task was carried out by an unemployed resident of temporarily occupied Melitopol. Russian special services recruited her in exchange for a promise to “close” the case of illegal drug possession.

Before being sent to the territory controlled by Ukraine, the woman underwent training in occupied Melitopol. She was taught conspiracy, terrain orientation, and firearms shooting.

After training, the agent traveled through Belarus to Zhytomyr, and from there to Kyiv. In the capital, she regularly changed hotels and used additional measures of concealment.

Later, a curator from Russia gave her the coordinates of a cache in a forest park area of Kyiv. There, the woman took the pistol and ammunition that she was going to use for the murder.

During a search of the hotel room, SBU officers found a weapon and a smartphone through which the agent had been communicating with the Russian curator. The SBU said it had already identified him.

Investigators informed the detainee of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – high treason under martial law.

The court remanded the woman in custody without bail. If convicted, she faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
