The town of Cooladdie, considered the smallest settlement in the country with its own postcode, is up for sale in Australia. Along with the town, the new owner will receive a residential building and several operating businesses.
This is reported by ABC .
Residents of the Australian town of Cooladdie, Carol Yarrow and Joe Cornell, have decided to sell their settlement, which is home to just two people. The offer includes a four-bedroom house, as well as several sources of income related to local businesses.
The cost of the object is 400 thousand dollars. The town is located in the state of Queensland, about 9 hours drive from Brisbane.
The hub of Cooladdie life is the Foxtrap Roadhouse, a roadside establishment that caters to travellers and the owners of surrounding farms. The future owner will simultaneously operate as a postman, pub, motel, restaurant and shop.
Carol Yarrow said that working in the town requires a variety of tasks. “Today I did the mail route to Big Creek, which is about 5.5 hours of mostly dirt roads. Then I came back here to help in the store and in the evening serve drinks and food,” she said.
Despite its small population, Cooladdi hosts various events, including annual equestrian and motorsports competitions, which resumed last year.
The town has its own postcode 4479, allowing it to retain official settlement status. Cooladdy was once much larger, with up to 270 people living there at its peak. The population began to decline after the closure of the railway station and school.
Carol Yarrow, who has run the township with Joe Cornell for the past three years, said the decision to sell was because it was time to hand the business over to new people. She said: “I just turned 70 and I feel like I’m getting too old for this.” She added that there had been concerns about the township’s decline, but it had been saved and she hoped the new owners would continue the business.
Real estate agent Becky Jaisman described Cooladdie as a rare proposition for buyers, saying the town “has everything you could want and is full of character” and is profitable thanks to several sources of income.
Merwe County Mayor Sean “Zoro” Rednage called Cooladdi a unique place. According to him, a significant number of tourists stop there for a holiday or overnight stay, and the future owner can count on the support of local authorities.
