An explosion occurred at QatarEnergy’s Barzan gas facility in Ras Laffan, Qatar, during a production start-up. The incident injured 54 people and left 18 missing.

According to Qatar’s Ministry of Interior, the explosion occurred during the start-up of production processes at the Barzan gas facility in the industrial city of Ras Laffan. The agency called the incident a “technical accident.”
After the explosion, a fire broke out on the site, which was later contained by emergency services. Rescue teams continue to search for 18 missing people, and work at the scene of the incident is ongoing.
It is also known that 54 people were injured to varying degrees. Authorities stated that there is currently no threat to the population, and no leaks of hazardous substances have been recorded.
QatarEnergy said emergency services were immediately dispatched to the site and brought the fire under control. The company did not specify whether any equipment at the gas complex was damaged.
The Barzan Gas Facility is part of the Ras Laffan Industrial Complex and is used for the processing and transportation of natural gas. Its capacity is about 1.4 billion cubic feet of gas per day, the production is supplied to Qatar’s domestic needs, including energy and industry.
The Ras Laffan complex is one of the world’s key energy hubs and the country’s largest liquefied natural gas production and export hub. According to journalists, this is where the main capacities of Qatar, which is one of the world’s leading LNG exporters, are concentrated.
