“An eye for an eye”: Yemeni Houthis declare naval blockade of Saudi Arabia

Yemen’s Houthis have announced a naval blockade of Saudi Arabia, effective immediately. The group said the decision was in response to Riyadh’s actions and threatened further escalation in the event of new attacks.

The representative of the military wing of the Yemeni Houthi movement, Yahya Sari, announced the immediate introduction of a maritime embargo against Saudi Arabia. According to him, the decision was made on the principle of “an eye for an eye” in response to the actions of the Saudi authorities.

In a statement, the Houthis accused Saudi Arabia of continuing the blockade of Yemeni territories under their control. The group claims that Riyadh has maintained a blockade of ports and airports for almost 12 years, as well as causing economic damage to the country.

In addition to announcing a naval blockade, the Houthis called on their supporters to mobilize and be fully prepared for any eventuality, saying any further escalation by Saudi Arabia would be met with a “comprehensive and harsh” response.

The Houthis launched missile strikes on Saudi Arabia last week, accusing the kingdom of attacking an airport under their control. According to Reuters, these were the first strikes officially announced by the group since an informal ceasefire between the parties came into effect in March 2022.

By the way, on the night of July 15, the US launched a new series of strikes on Iranian military facilities and announced the resumption of the naval blockade of ships heading to or leaving Iranian ports.

Earlier it was reported that the US is growing concerned about the lack of military resources amid the escalating conflict with Iran. According to sources, the Pentagon is preparing for a possible expansion of the military operation, but its capabilities are limited.
