Scientists recently discovered a strange space object that entered our solar system from distant interstellar spaces. The observations were made using the ATLAS telescope in Chile, a system that specializes in searching for potentially hazardous asteroids.

This is reported by the publication Interesting Engineering.

This mysterious object turned out to be a comet of interstellar origin and was designated 3I/ATLAS. The discovery was made on July 1, when the comet was at a considerable distance – approximately 670 million kilometers from Earth.

This is the third such object officially recorded within our system. NASA scientists assure that 3I/ATLAS does not pose a threat to the planet – it will pass quite far, at least 1.6 astronomical units, or about 240 million kilometers. There is an assumption that its trajectory may pass near the orbit of Mars.

According to astronomers’ forecasts, the comet will reach its closest distance to the Sun at the end of October — around the 30th — at a distance of approximately 210 million kilometers (1.4 astronomical units).
