An Israeli was mobilized in Ukraine after a pilgrimage to Uman.

In Ukraine, 49-year-old Israeli citizen Yonatan Karlinsky-Mashek was detained after traveling to Uman to celebrate Rosh Hashanah. After attempting to leave the country, he disappeared from contact, and his family was subsequently reportedly informed of the decision to mobilize him into the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

This was reported by Israeli media, in particular Mako , citing sources familiar with the situation.

According to journalists, Karlinsky was born in Ukraine but moved to Israel about 14 years ago. After his recent pilgrimage to Uman, he and other Hasidim were returning by bus through the Romanian border crossing.

During a document check, the man was removed from the bus. According to a Mako source, Ukrainian law enforcement officers may have suspected he had Ukrainian citizenship after hearing him speak Ukrainian. After the check, he was allegedly detained as a Ukrainian citizen subject to military registration and conscription.

“He wanted to be polite, but it ended with him getting arrested,” the source told the publication.

After his arrest, contact with Karlinsky was lost. His family and friends appealed to the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs for assistance in attempting to secure his return to the country.

Israeli media, citing the man’s relatives, report that it was subsequently learned that he was being sent for mobilization procedures. According to one theory, he may have been taken to a military base near Odessa. However, Karlinsky’s exact whereabouts are still unknown to his family.
