Mehdi Mahmudian, one of the screenwriters of the Oscar-nominated Iranian drama “It Was Just an Accident,” has been detained in Tehran.

AP writes about this.

According to the film’s representatives, the arrest occurred on January 31. Formal charges against Mahmudyan have not yet been made public. However, his arrest occurred several days after he, along with 16 other signatories, issued a statement criticizing the leader of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and condemning the repression of protesters.

Two other signatories of the statement, Vida Rabbani and Abdullah Momeni, were also arrested in connection with the case.

The film’s director and Oscar nominee, Jafar Panagi, publicly condemned his co-writer’s arrest. He called Makhmudyan a “prisoner of conscience” and emphasized that his absence is felt both in prison and beyond.

Panagi is also among the signatories of a January 28 statement calling the mass killings of protesters an organized state crime against humanity.
