An outbreak of Coxsackie disease has been recorded in the Kyiv region. A total of 13 children have been infected, one of whom continues to be treated in a hospital.

This was reported by the Center for Public Health of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.

The department noted that twelve children have already completed treatment and recovered. Doctors are conducting an epidemiological investigation to determine the causes and conditions that could have contributed to the spread of the infection. As of November 4, no new cases of the disease have been recorded.

“Recently, an outbreak of Coxsackie disease was registered in the Kyiv region, which affected 13 children. 12 of them have already completed inpatient treatment and recovered. Another child is in the inpatient treatment, where she is provided with all necessary medical care,” the Central Hospital reported.

The Coxsackie virus belongs to the group of enteroviruses and is divided into two types – A and B. It is spread through close contact between people, sharing household items, toys or utensils.

Coxsackie virus is transmitted:

  • Fecal-oral route – through dirty hands, unwashed vegetables and fruits, contaminated water;
  • By airborne droplets – during coughing or sneezing;
  • Contact-household way – through objects, surfaces, and shared things.

The main symptoms of the disease:

  • a sharp increase in body temperature to 38–40°C ;
  • sore throat, redness of the tonsils;
  • rash in the form of blisters on the palms, soles and in the mouth (so-called “hand-foot-mouth” syndrome);
  • nausea, vomiting, diarrhea;
  • headache and general weakness.

Doctors note that the incubation period lasts 3–6 days , and in most cases the disease resolves on its own within 7–10 days . Complications such as meningitis, encephalitis, or myocarditis are rare but require emergency medical attention.

To prevent infection you need to:

  • wash your hands regularly with soap, especially after using the toilet and before eating;
  • use only boiled or bottled water;
  • wash vegetables and fruits thoroughly;
  • keep the premises clean, disinfect surfaces, doorknobs and toys;
  • Avoid swimming in bodies of water of questionable quality.

The Central Hospital emphasized that there is no specific vaccine against the Coxsackie virus , so the main method of prevention remains compliance with hygiene rules and strengthening immunity.

By the way, the first fatal case of coronavirus in a long time in the new season of the disease was recorded in the Lviv region . The disease is again actively spreading in the region, and doctors warn that COVID-19 poses a particular danger to people with chronic diseases and weakened immunity.

Recall that in Ukraine, a case of the Omicron coronavirus subvariant called Nimbus and Stratus was detected for the first time .

Earlier , Kyiv recorded a rapid increase in hospitalizations due to COVID-19 . In a month, the number of patients in hospitals increased more than fourfold, a quarter of them children.
