Former Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham has been elected as the new leader of the ruling Labour Party. Following the completion of formal procedures, he will officially lead the UK government, succeeding Keir Starmer.
After being elected party leader, the King of England will instruct Burnham to form a new government and then formally appoint him prime minister. Starmer, who announced his resignation at the end of June, served as acting prime minister until the conclusion of the party’s internal elections.
During the party conference, Burnham called for unity and declared his desire to restore hope to the British people. He also promised to avoid internal conflicts within the party and emphasized that Labour must win on its own values, not by imitating its political opponents.
The new leader praised Keir Starmer’s work, noting that under his leadership, the party had gone from a crushing defeat to a resounding victory. Burnham stated that he would continue reforms in healthcare, labor legislation, and the modernization of public services.
Andy Burnham previously led Greater Manchester for nine years and also served in the cabinets of Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, including as Health Secretary.
His appointment will give Britain its seventh prime minister in the last decade, since the Brexit referendum.
As a reminder, the UK is developing new long-range missiles for Ukraine that will not contain American components and could enter service within a year. According to sources, the new systems will be cheaper than Storm Shadow missiles and will have a range of over 500 kilometers.
