Greece has signed the Convention on the Establishment of an International Compensation Commission to Consider Claims for Damage Caused by Russia’s Aggression against Ukraine, becoming the 35th member of this international mechanism.
This is reported by Ukrinform .
It is noted that the signing of the convention took place in Strasbourg. The document was signed on behalf of Greece by the country’s permanent representative to the Council of Europe, Nicholas Sigalas.
The press service of the Council of Europe reported that Greece’s participation expands the circle of states that support the creation of an international mechanism to compensate for the damage caused to Ukraine as a result of Russian aggression.
“The International Claims Commission represents justice and hope for tens of thousands of victims. It is our firm belief that those who suffered will not be forgotten. I call for the earliest possible ratification so that we can promptly begin the work of the Commission for the people of Ukraine,” said Council of Europe Secretary General Alain Berset.
It is worth adding that the convention on the establishment of an International Compensation Commission for Ukraine was signed in The Hague during an international conference organized by the Council of Europe and the Netherlands. The Commission is part of the general mechanism for compensation for damages caused by Russian aggression.
It is also noted that the Register of Damages for Ukraine, established in 2023, is engaged in the collection and registration of applications for compensation from individuals, organizations and state bodies. Currently, 44 states and the European Union have joined the Register, and the total number of applications submitted exceeds 80,000.
