Apple is preparing a major redesign of the iPhone for the 20th anniversary of the series, scheduled for 2027. According to new leaks, the company plans to completely get rid of the physical side buttons, replacing them with “solid-state” touch elements.

This is reported by Hindustantimes.

The idea for the upgrade first surfaced back in 2022, with the iPhone 15 Pro models expected to get a similar feature as part of a project called Project Bong. The plans were scrapped in the late stages of development, and the implementation was postponed indefinitely.

The project has now passed the functional testing stage. The power, volume, action and camera buttons will be replaced. Instead of the classic mechanical pressing, the user will feel a vibration response thanks to haptic motors.

This approach promises several benefits. First, the lack of mechanical parts makes the device more reliable and durable, as there are fewer components subject to wear and tear. Second, Apple will be able to create a more holistic and minimalist design, improving water resistance and overall aesthetics.

Rumors suggest the anniversary iPhone could be almost entirely made of glass, with no bezels around the display or cutouts for the front-facing sensors. Apple has confirmed that it is working on such a device, pointing to the iPhone Air as the first step towards “Jobs’ dream glass smartphone.”

Interestingly, the company has repeatedly changed the design of anniversary models: a striking example is the iPhone X, which for the first time got rid of the Home button and frames around the screen.

As a reminder, on September 9, Apple held its traditional fall presentation, dubbed “Awe Dropping.” This year, the company introduced four new iPhone 17 models, including the all-new iPhone 17 Air, as well as updated AirPods Pro 3, Apple Watch Series 11, Watch SE 3, and Watch Ultra 3.

As reported, French prosecutors have launched an investigation against Apple over the possible illegal collection of users’ voice recordings by Siri.
