Argentine tango not for Messi: Spain wins 2026 World Cup

In the final match of the 2026 World Cup, the Spanish national team beat the Argentine national team with a score of 1:0, taking the title of world champions from the Argentines.

Argentina failed to register a single shot on target during regulation time. However, the Albiceleste accomplished the first part of their task—forcing the match into overtime. However, a key moment occurred in stoppage time: Argentina’s Enzo Fernández was sent off for a second yellow card.

Argentina entered overtime with a man down, which was a bad sign for the reigning world champions. However, the Argentines continued to fight back desperately. The champions held out for the first half of overtime, but in the second period, Spain overwhelmed their weakened opponents. Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal, making it 1-0.

The world champions tried to save themselves and even created what was perhaps their only dangerous moment, but the ball went over Unai Simon’s goal. Spain had won the 2026 World Cup, and the victory seemed inevitable. After receiving the trophy from US President Donald Trump, La Furia Roja captain Rodri ceremoniously raised it above his head.

Happiness always comes alongside sadness. And that night, Leo Messi was sad. After receiving his silver medals, the legendary Argentine stood in front of his home stands with tears in his eyes. It seemed like a farewell, because, judging by everything, this World Cup would be Messi’s last.
