Armed Forces of Ukraine inspection: beatings and illegal detention discovered in certain units

Military Ombudsman Olga Reshetylova reported that during inspections in some assault regiments of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, massive violations of the rights of servicemen were discovered.

She said this in an interview with LB.

Reshetylova explained that she visited certain units together with the presidential inspection and saw cases of “outright crime” there. These included beatings, illegal detention of soldiers, and threats to the lives and health of soldiers and their families.

She transferred all materials with signs of criminal offenses to law enforcement agencies and emphasized that the responsibility now lies with the Prosecutor General’s Office. The Ombudsman expects a prompt and effective investigation.

Reshetylova emphasized that such facts do not apply to all assault regiments. Most of them demonstrate high combat effectiveness, but individual units, she said, “felt impunity.”

She added that the further development of the situation depends on how quickly law enforcement officers bring the guilty commanders to justice. The Ombudsman emphasized that effectiveness on the battlefield does not cancel responsibility for violations of the rights of servicemen.

As previously reported, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appointed Olga Kobylinska as military ombudsman.

As a reminder, on June 3, the Verkhovna Rada supported in the first reading draft law No. 13266, which provides for the creation of the institution of a military ombudsman to protect the rights and freedoms of servicemen . The document received 287 votes from people’s deputies.
