There are approximately 300,000 criminal cases registered in Ukraine regarding desertion and desertion from service. There is discussion about increasing the punishment for desertion from service, but the final decision will depend on the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
This was reported by MP Ruslan Gorbenko in an interview with the Telegraph newspaper. He specified that Ukrainians often return to service after fleeing, and the number of such cases has already exceeded 50% of all criminal cases.
“This is good. But in order to prevent such cases in the future, legislative changes regarding punishment need to be implemented,” emphasized Gorbenko.
The MP recalled that in the Russian Armed Forces, escape attempts are punishable by shooting. “Our military commanders seek to encourage those who despise the army and leave the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Possible measures include the seizure of accounts or property,” he added.
He also reported that the law enforcement committee had received proposals to increase the terms of punishment for the SZCH. “There are a lot of proposals. We need to sit down with the General Staff and decide what will be voted for and what will not. In the Rada, there are supporters of the ‘SZCH party’ and supporters of the ‘Victory party’, but none of the groups has a majority,” Gorbenko summarized.
