From August 1 to 14, Orthodox Christians will observe the Assumption Fast, one of the strictest of the year. For two weeks, special dietary restrictions will apply, and on August 6, believers will be allowed to taste fish on the occasion of the Transfiguration of the Lord.

The Assumption Fast lasts for two weeks and ends with the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Its purpose is not only to abstain from certain foods, but also to purify one’s soul.

What can you eat during the Assumption Fast?

Nutrition:

  • Monday, Wednesday, Friday – dry food: only raw food without heat treatment and without oil (bread, fruits, vegetables, berries, water).
  • Tuesday and Thursday – hot dishes without oil: porridge, stewed vegetables, simple soups.
  • Saturday and Sunday – vegetable oil and a little wine are allowed.

During Lent, believers are not allowed to eat meat, dairy products, eggs, or fish. The exception is August 6 , the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, when fish and a little wine are allowed.

How to properly break a fast?

Experts advise gradually returning to your usual diet:

  • start with vegetable dishes, cereals and legumes;
  • introduce small portions of lean meat or fish;
  • add fermented milk products, such as yogurt or kefir;
  • Avoid eating fried and fatty foods in large quantities to avoid overloading the stomach.

This approach will help the body gently transition to a normal diet without stressing the digestive system.
