From August 1 to 14, Orthodox believers in Ukraine observe the Assumption Fast, the shortest of all, but no less strict. It is established in honor of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a moment that believers consider not death, but a transition to eternal life. In addition to dietary restrictions, the fast imposes a number of mandatory prohibitions on behavior and lifestyle.

The dates of the fast have changed due to the transition to the new Julian calendar: previously, the Assumption Fast began on August 14 and lasted until the 27th.

Fasting symbolizes spiritual preparation for a great church holiday. In terms of the severity of restrictions, it is comparable to Great Lent.

During the fasting period, you absolutely cannot:
to quarrel or gossip,

to rage, insult and slander others,

to refuse those who need help,

to offend loved ones and to be offended yourself.

It is also prohibited to:
wedding celebrations – during the Assumption Fast, no church performs a marriage ritual (without a wedding, the marriage is considered invalid). You can formally register the marriage, but the wedding feast or festivities will have to be postponed.

any loud, entertaining events, concerts, weddings, banquets — fasting requires restraint and humility.

Dietary restrictions for laypeople
Monday, Wednesday, Friday — only plant-based food without oil.

Tuesday and Thursday – a hot meal without animal products is allowed.

Saturday and Sunday – wine and hot food are allowed.

On the Transfiguration of the Lord, fish is allowed.

If fasting is harmful to health, people with chronic illnesses, pregnant women, nursing mothers, the elderly, military personnel, and children can avoid a strict form of fasting — the main thing is that this is agreed upon with a spiritual father.

Fasting is not just about food, but primarily about spiritual purification: abstinence, sincerity, prayer, and good deeds.
