Attempted arson attack on defense company in Munich: two suspects arrested

In Munich, on the night of Thursday, September 3, unknown persons threw several incendiary devices from a car onto a construction site in the Berg am Laim district, where defense companies Rohde & Schwarz and Helsing are located. Police have detained two suspects, and investigators are investigating a possible political motive.

This was reported by the Süddeutsche Zeitung, citing the police and the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office.

Around midnight, passersby reported to law enforcement that several incendiary devices had been thrown from a car on Mühldorfstrasse. One of them caught fire, but the police who arrived on the scene quickly extinguished the flames. Another device, which did not work, was later neutralized by specialists. No significant damage was recorded as a result of the incident.

After that, the police began searching for the suspects. Later, a 28-year-old woman and a 38-year-old man were detained at one of the gas stations. Both are Bulgarian citizens. Their possible involvement in the attack is currently being established.

The investigation has been transferred to the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office. Investigators do not rule out a political motive. However, it is not yet known which company could have been the direct target of the attack.

Rohde & Schwarz was previously mentioned among the possible targets of left-wing extremists after the attack on the power grid in Munich in 2021.

As a reminder, two disturbing incidents occurred in Germany the night before: an unidentified object exploded at Augsburg’s main train station, injuring two people, and at a substation near Cologne, police suspected deliberate damage to equipment.
