The Australian Government will contribute an additional AUD 10 million (approximately US$6.8 million) to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund.
This was announced by Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong.
The funds are intended to ensure lighting, heating for residential buildings, and the stable operation of critical services amid systematic Russian strikes on civilian areas and energy infrastructure in Ukraine.
The Australian Foreign Ministry noted that Ukrainian families are experiencing prolonged power outages, freezing temperatures, and severe disruptions to hospitals and other essential services as Russia intensifies attacks during one of the harshest winters on record.
Penny Wong emphasized that Russia is using winter as a weapon against the Ukrainian people, and the continued attacks on homes and critical infrastructure demonstrates Moscow’s lack of genuine willingness to end the war, despite the efforts of the United States and its partners.
The Australian Department of Global Affairs also reported that since February 2022, Australia has provided Ukraine with over AUD$1.7 billion in military, humanitarian, economic, and energy assistance. Including the new package, the country’s total contribution to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund has reached AUD$40 million, which exceeds US$27 million.
