German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius believes that US President Donald Trump has moved closer to Russia due to domestic political pressure ahead of the congressional elections.

Thiswas reported by the DPA agency, citing a statement by Pistorius during an employers’ conference in Berlin on October 13.

According to the German minister, Trump found himself in a difficult political situation, as the US midterm elections are only a few weeks away.

Pistorius said the American president now has his “back against the wall.” He explained that political leaders who face domestic challenges often try to achieve success on the international stage.

The minister noted that similar cases have already occurred in history. At the same time, he is convinced that Trump’s current foreign policy steps may have the opposite result.

In particular, Pistorius linked Washington’s latest decisions regarding Russia to the approaching US Congressional elections.

On November 3, 2026, the entire House of Representatives and about a third of the Senate will be up for re-election in the United States. The Republican Party currently holds a majority in both chambers.

According to DPA, polls indicate a possible victory for the Democrats in the fight for control of the House of Representatives. At the same time, the situation with the Senate remains uncertain.

If Republicans lose their majority in Congress, it could significantly complicate the implementation of Trump’s policy initiatives before the end of his presidential term.

Pistorius’ statement came after the American president reached an agreement with Vladimir Putin regarding the supply of Russian diesel fuel.

On October 9, Trump announced that Russia would supply diesel to the US and global markets. Washington also temporarily eased related sanctions restrictions.

The decision drew criticism from both the US’s European allies and American lawmakers.

Recall that previously the United Kingdom, Finland and the European Union criticized the diesel deal between Trump and Putin . European politicians stressed that easing pressure on Moscow could harm international efforts to end the war.

In addition, the first tanker with Russian diesel fuel is probably already heading to the US . At the same time, experts doubt that these supplies will have a significant impact on world fuel prices.
