On Wednesday morning, May 20, an increased air threat was recorded in several areas of Latvia and Lithuania due to the appearance of drones near state borders.

This was reported by the Baltic media, citing statements from the countries’ defense departments.

In Latvia, an alert was declared in the Kraslav, Ludza and Rezekne districts. The country’s National Armed Forces stated that they, together with NATO allies, are constantly monitoring the situation in the air.

“We have strengthened the air defense potential on the eastern border by sending additional units there,” the Latvian Armed Forces reported.

The military also noted that, against the backdrop of Russia’s war against Ukraine, the risks of incidents with drones remain high, in particular due to possible airspace violations.

The Lithuanian Ministry of Defense confirmed that the air alert was declared after a drone was spotted near the border, which was likely moving from the Belarusian side.

“NATO’s airspace patrol operation over the Baltic region has begun,” the Lithuanian Defense Ministry said.

The situation is currently being monitored in both countries, and NATO forces are increasing airspace patrols in the region.

As a reminder, a NATO fighter jet patrolling the airspace in the Baltic region shot down a drone over the territory of Estonia . The incident occurred over Lake Võrtsjärv in the south of the country.
