The Security Service of Ukraine has in absentia declared a suspect in a representative of the occupation penitentiary system in the temporarily occupied territory of the Luhansk region, who is suspected of cruel treatment of Ukrainian prisoners of war.

This was reported to the SBU.

According to the investigation, after the occupation of part of the Luhansk region, the defendant switched sides to the Russian invaders and received a position in the so-called correctional colony No. 4, which is controlled by the Russian Federal Penitentiary Service.

As law enforcement officers have established, the occupiers are using this facility to hold Ukrainian prisoners of war and resistance members.

The investigation documented that during 2022-2026, the suspect participated in the torture of captured Ukrainians.

“It is documented that he arranged a so-called ‘reception’ for Ukrainian prisoners, when they were beaten with rubber batons on various parts of the body and head upon arrival at the colony,” the SBU reported.

The special service emphasized that such actions are a gross violation of the Geneva Convention on the Treatment of Prisoners of War.

Based on the evidence collected, investigators in absentia informed the man of suspicion under the article on the cruel treatment of prisoners of war.

“Since the perpetrator is hiding from justice in the temporarily occupied part of the territory of Ukraine, comprehensive measures are underway to bring him to justice,” the SBU noted.

The investigation was conducted by SBU officers in Donetsk and Luhansk regions under the procedural guidance of the Prosecutor General’s Office.

As a reminder, the Security Service of Ukraine reported suspicions against Serbian mercenary Davor Savic, who is suspected of war crimes during the occupation of the Kyiv region in 2022.

As reported, military medic of “Azov” Oleksandr Krokhmalyuk was tortured to death in Russian captivity.
