Belgium has put forward strict conditions for the use of Russian assets

The Belgian government is insisting on additional guarantees from the European Union regarding the use of frozen Russian assets, despite the already proposed program for their disposal.
As Politico reports , the country’s authorities believe that the latest proposal from EU ambassadors does not satisfy its position, and without additional assurances, Belgium is not ready to agree to the conditions.
According to the source, the previous proposal included three key points: the country could receive funding within the entire package in the event of lawsuits or other actions by Moscow, use the security system regardless of the total amount of guarantees from other EU states, and funds would not be transferred to Ukraine until guarantees were received.
In addition, all EU capitals were to simultaneously terminate bilateral investment treaties with Russia.
However, according to unnamed diplomats, Belgium rejected these conditions because the country needed additional guarantees that it would “not be exposed to disproportionate risks.”
Belgian officials stressed that any attempts to ignore their concerns “would be pointless,” and in such a case, the funds in the Euroclear depository accounts “simply will not be unblocked.”
As a reminder, Belgian Prime Minister Bart de Wever, in a letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, named three conditions for converting frozen Russian assets into a loan for Ukraine.
As reported, Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevost sharply criticized the new, not yet officially published proposal of the European Commission on the transfer of frozen Russian assets to Ukraine, stating that the document is “categorically unacceptable.”
It should be noted that the European Union is considering the possibility of isolating the Belgian government for blocking the initiative to finance Ukraine with frozen Russian assets.
