Belgium intends to formally recognize the independence of Palestine during the UN General Assembly in September and, in parallel, impose sanctions against the Israeli government.
This was stated by the country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maxime Prevost.
According to him, Brussels will condemn any manifestations of anti-Semitism in Palestine, but due to the critical humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, it plans to “take action.”
The sanctions will include a ban on imports from Israeli settlements, a review of government procurement policies from Israeli companies and restrictions on consular assistance to Belgians living in the settlements.
“Palestine will be a state fully recognized on the international stage by Belgium. Aware of the trauma caused to the Israeli people by the Hamas attacks of October 7, 2023, the administrative formalization of recognition by royal decree will take place after the release of the last hostage and on the condition that Hamas does not participate in the governance of Palestine,” Prevost emphasized.
Let us recall that in New York, 15 countries signed the right to the intention to recognize the independence of Palestine. Among them are France, Andorra, Australia, Canada, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Slovenia and Spain.
Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron announced his intention to officially recognize the Palestinian state.
