Belgium refuses to confiscate frozen Russian assets

Belgium does not agree to the confiscation of frozen Russian assets stored in its banks.

This was stated by Foreign Minister Maxime Prevost in an interview with Euronews.

He said such a move would damage the country’s reputation as a financial centre and could undermine confidence in the euro.
“This would be a very bad signal for other states that also have sovereign assets in Brussels or other European capitals,” Prevost explained.

At the same time, the minister stressed that Belgium would join in guaranteeing security for Ukraine as part of a “coalition of the willing.” Details are still being clarified, but, according to him, support could include aircraft and assistance with demining.

Earlier, the UK government announced the allocation of more than 1 billion pounds sterling (about $1.3 billion) for defense support to Ukraine. The funding is provided by funds received from frozen Russian assets.
