Beyond common sense: what Putin and Macron really talked about

With the coming to power of Donald Trump in the United States, Western leaders have increasingly engaged in dialogue with Kremlin dictator Vladimir Putin, as evidenced in particular by the recent conversation between the presidents of France and the Russian Federation, which most likely concerned the issue of Armenia.

This opinion was expressed on the air of “Pryamoy” by Roman Bezsmertny, a diplomat, Ambassador of Ukraine to Belarus in 2010-2011.

“For people of common sense, talking to a war criminal, a child abductor, a criminal is beyond common sense. However, with the arrival of Donald Trump and his private interests, this common sense approach was broken. He started calling, they started talking to a criminal, and a war criminal. And then in the end, he said that, you see, no one talked to Putin, Putin doesn’t want to talk to anyone except himself. That is, Donald Trump,” Bezsmertny noted.

At the same time, he linked the conversation between Macron and Putin to the events in Armenia, where the FSB tried to carry out a coup d’état, involving the local church and the opposition.

“Yerevan and Paris have a very peculiar relationship, close… Emmanuel Macron made a call, where first of all the issues of Armenia were discussed, then it is obvious that the issues of Iran and the Middle East could not but be discussed. But the issue of Ukraine, the issue of negotiations and a ceasefire, and it could only be like that, somewhere in the finale of this long-term two-hour conversation, it could be heard. Well, it is obvious that having already had long-standing contacts, Emmanuel Macron could not but call President Zelensky,” the diplomat explains.

Bezsmertny emphasizes that with such conversations, world leaders are opening a “window of opportunity for the criminal Putin,” reviving him in international relations.

“Moscow is directly related to the current situation in Armenia. Because the FSB is directly related to the rebels who tried to carry out a coup. And this is already being talked about quite loudly in Armenia. Moreover, after the US attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities, Moscow tried to open a land corridor to Iran through Armenia in order to provide assistance to the criminal regime. As a result, Pashinyan, as Prime Minister, understanding the situation he was in, categorically refused, which further aggravated relations between Moscow and Yerevan,” the former ambassador added.

In addition, the diplomat does not rule out that another armed conflict may arise in the Caucasus, which Putin is extremely interested in.

“Everything that was done first by Trump and then by Macron, unfortunately, does not contribute to driving this Moscow rat into a corner, but rather reanimates it in international relations. However, understanding the situation in the Caucasus, it is very threatening and provokes the emergence of another flame of war, in which Moscow is interested. Therefore, one can understand this step by Emmanuel Macron in particular. Let me remind you that before that, Macron communicated with the Prime Minister of Armenia Pashinyan,” Roman Bezsmertny believes.

Recall, French President Emmanuel Macron had a telephone conversation with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin on July 1 for the first time in three years. According to a statement from the Elysee Palace, Macron and Putin decided to coordinate their countries’ approaches to Iran. It is noted that their conversation lasted two hours.

In late June, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that law enforcement agencies in Armenia had foiled an attempt to seize power by the “Holy Struggle” movement. The day before, Armenian media outlets had received a coup plan allegedly being prepared by the opposition against the current Armenian government.

Subsequently, the Speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia, Alen Simonyan, stated that the country’s authorities should seriously consider suspending the broadcasting of Russian TV channels in Armenia.
