Today, August 19, the bodies of 1,000 victims were returned to Ukraine as a result of repatriation measures.
This was reported by the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War.
In particular, among those returned, five died in captivity. They were on the lists of “seriously wounded and seriously ill” prisoners for exchange. In addition, defenders from the Donetsk, Zaporizhzhya, Kursk and Lugansk directions were returned to their homeland.
“In the near future, law enforcement investigators, together with expert institutions of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, will carry out all necessary examinations and identify the repatriated bodies,” the statement said.
During the preliminary exchanges, there were bodies of Russian soldiers that Russia presented as Ukrainian. Some were dressed in Ukrainian army uniforms. The Ukrainian side is conducting an examination for accurate identification.
