Poland is ready to consider transferring border controls to its territory if Russian shelling in Ukraine poses a threat to border crossing workers and citizens. At the same time, checks should be carried out jointly by Polish and Ukrainian services, as Ukrainian border guards cannot work independently in the Schengen area.

This was reported by the Polish TV channel Polsat News, citing a response from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administration of Poland.

The Polish department explained that they are ready to agree to conduct inspections from the Polish side of the border if the deterioration of the security situation in Ukraine makes this necessary.

“If the situation in Ukraine changes and, for reasons of safety of employees and persons crossing the border in both directions, it becomes necessary to introduce control on the Polish side of the border, Poland is ready to agree to such a decision,” the ministry noted.

However, a final decision on the introduction of the new mechanism has not yet been made. Since Poland is part of the Schengen area, such changes will have to be notified to the European Commission.

In addition, Polish legislation does not allow services from countries outside the Schengen area to independently carry out controls on its territory. The restrictions apply to both document checks and control of goods in accordance with European Union requirements.

Why Ukraine wants to move border control

Ukraine has previously begun talks with Poland on the possibility of conducting border checks on the territory of the neighboring state. This option is seen as a way to maintain stable communication even if checkpoints are damaged or destroyed by Russian shelling.

The transfer of control should also reduce risks for border guards and people crossing the border.

Ukraine and Poland are currently discussing the terms of possible cooperation. Specific terms for the introduction of the new format have not yet been determined.

It was previously reported that a Russian Shahed jet hit near the Yagodyn checkpoint in the Volyn region , not far from the border with Poland. The blast wave damaged the checkpoint building at the entrance to the terminal.
