The United Kingdom and France have agreed on a plan for an international mine clearance operation in the Strait of Hormuz. The mission is planned to involve a coalition of 15 countries.
Bloomberg reports this, citing sources familiar with the preparation of the operation.
According to the agency’s sources, the militaries of several states are already finalizing coordination of actions to clear the strait of sea mines. The participating countries have already agreed to provide personnel and necessary resources for the upcoming mission.
Bloomberg sources told Reuters that the coalition will include 15 nations, with most expected to join the operation within weeks of its launch, so as not to create additional strain on commercial shipping.
Meanwhile, preparations are still ongoing. In particular, the mission organizers continue to look for additional equipment, including support vessels.
Despite the readiness to launch the operation, the deployment of forces has not yet begun. According to the agency, the participating countries are waiting for the conclusion of a peace agreement between the United States and Iran, which should guarantee safe shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and create acceptable conditions for the work of the military.
Bloomberg’s interlocutors also reported that the mission led by Britain and France is ready to maintain contacts with the Iranian authorities to resolve possible operational issues during the operation.
By the way, US and Iranian negotiators have agreed on a draft 60-day memorandum to extend the ceasefire and begin negotiations on the Iranian nuclear program.
It was previously reported that the US and Iran may soon agree on a basic agreement that should stop tensions in the region and pave the way for full-fledged negotiations on the nuclear program.
